Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure used to help identify genetic abnormalities in created embryos, aiming to prevent certain genetic diseases in new-borns.

In some cases, a genetically abnormal embryo may mature and even implant in the womb ending in abortion or a child born with a disorder. By performing PGD we can indetify these embryos before they are transfered, reducing the possibility of conceiving a child with a particular genetic factor.

PGD starts with an in vitro fertilsation process, normally including: ovarian stimulation, oocyte retrieval and fertilisation in the laboratory. In the first three days the embryo is divided into 8 cells.

A biopsy is performed once embryos are formed. It is usually carried out on day three of embryo life, when they have 6-8 cells. Then one of these cells is retrieved using laser technology, not compromising their normal development.  After the biopsy, embryos are maintained in vitro until the transfer.

Cells obtained from biopsied embryos are processed for a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) genetic study. This tests for chromosomal aneuploidy, and also for translocations, inversions and other chromosomal abnormalities—both gains and loses, and/or for detection of embryos carrying certain monogenic inheritable diseases.

Once a PGD procedure has been performed and healthy day-5 embryos have been identified, those with the best morphological characteristics will be transfered.

Who can benefit from PGD?
PGD will suit any couple at risk of transmitting a disease or genetic condition to their offspring. Here there is a list of potencial candidates for PGD:
  • Women over 39 years of age.
  • Sex-related genetic disease carriers.
  • Single gene defect carriers.
  • Those with chromosomal abnormalities (abnormal karyotypes)
  • Women who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss associated with chromosomal problems

PGD is also used for gender selection; however, this procedure is not permitted in our country.
